Seed Programs International

Seed Programs International, founded in 1998 by John Batcha, began by repurposing surplus quality seeds to combat hunger globally. Initially focused on redistributing unused seeds, SPI has since expanded its mission to include providing agricultural training and resources. By partnering with local organizations, SPI helps communities develop sustainable agricultural solutions, empowering them to build food security and resilience over the long term

Challenge

Over 2 billion people globally face food insecurity due to poverty, conflict, and climate change, with the most vulnerable populations concentrated in Sub-Saharan Africa and South/Southeast Asia. These regions, where farming families are disproportionately affected, are especially vulnerable to crop failures and hunger. Seed Programs International addresses these challenges by focusing on women, children, and crisis recovery. Through partnerships, SPI supports communities in growing their own food, improving livelihoods, and building resilience against the factors that threaten their food security. Domestically, SPI enhances food literacy and promotes healthy eating habits through agricultural education in schools and community programs.
